UPI Fraud: What to Do in the First Hour

When money leaves your account through a UPI or net-banking fraud, speed matters. Banks and the cybercrime system can sometimes place a hold on the receiving account, but only if they are told quickly. Do these steps in order.

1. Call 1930 immediately

1930 is India's national cybercrime helpline. Keep this ready: the amount, date and time, the transaction ID / UTR number, and the receiving UPI ID or account number.

2. Call your bank's 24x7 helpline

Tell them it is a fraudulent transaction. Ask them to block your card and UPI, and to flag the transaction for a fund hold. Note the complaint reference number and the name of the person you spoke to. Follow up in writing (email, or a letter to the branch and the bank's nodal officer).

3. File a complaint on the official portal

Go to cybercrime.gov.in, choose the option for financial fraud (menu wording changes from time to time), and submit the details with evidence. Save the acknowledgement number; you will need it to track the case.

4. Preserve every piece of evidence

  • Screenshots of chats, call logs, SMS and emails
  • The UPI app's transaction details and your bank statement
  • The fraudster's phone number, UPI ID, account number, website or app name

Do not delete chats or uninstall apps. Evidence disappears quickly.

5. Secure yourself

Change your UPI PIN and net-banking password. Remove any screen-sharing app (AnyDesk, TeamViewer, QuickSupport) you were asked to install. Check your accounts for other unknown transactions.

6. Follow up

Ask your bank for a written status. If the bank has not resolved your complaint within 30 days, you can escalate to the RBI Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in. RBI's customer-protection rules can limit your liability for unauthorised transactions that are reported promptly; the outcome depends on the facts of your case, so ask your bank about it in writing.

Beware of anyone who promises guaranteed recovery for a fee. Recovery depends on official investigation and banking procedures, and nobody can guarantee it.
